Spectrum -2: Worse

Level -2 is the level where evil is no longer limited to a basic wrongdoing. It begins to produce wider effects. At this level, evil does not merely occur. It begins to damage others, drag others in, mislead others, hurt more people or create a chain reaction.

In simple terms, -1 is:

“I commit evil.”

-2 is:

“My evil begins to harm other people.”

Therefore, -2 is not judged only by the form of the sin itself, but by the reach of its effects.

A person lies. That is bad. But when he lies to bring someone down, cover oppression, slander, break relationships or influence the public, that is worse.

A person gets angry. That can become bad if it is not controlled. But when his anger frightens his family, destroys the emotions of his children, breaks the heart of his spouse, damages the home and causes others to live under pressure, that is worse.

A person misunderstands something. That can happen. But when he spreads that misunderstanding, prevents others from hearing clarification and becomes the reason others are misled, that is worse.

The Qur’an gives a very clear foundation concerning evil that carries the burden of affecting others.

...لِيَحْمِلُوا أَوْزَارَهُمْ كَامِلَةً يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ وَمِنْ أَوْزَارِ ٱلَّذِينَ يُضِلُّونَهُم بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ

“So that they may bear their burdens in full on the Day of Resurrection and some of the burdens of those whom they mislead without knowledge...”

Excerpt from Surah an-Naḥl 16:25

This verse becomes a major foundation for -2. It shows that there are people who do not only carry their own sins, but also carry part of the burden of those whom they misled. This happens when a person’s evil does not stop with himself. It spreads to others.

Therefore, a sin that affects others is heavier than a sin that stops with oneself.

The Qur’an also states:

...وَلَيَحْمِلُنَّ أَثْقَالَهُمْ وَأَثْقَالًا مَّعَ أَثْقَالِهِمْ

“And they will surely carry their own burdens and other burdens along with their burdens.”

Excerpt from Surah al-‘Ankabūt 29:13

This verse strengthens the principle that some people carry additional sins because their actions involve others. They are not only misguided themselves, but they cause others to bear the effects of misguidance as well.

This is a characteristic of -2.

Evil begins to produce additional burdens. Not merely one’s own wrongdoing. Rather, a wrongdoing that opens the door for others to fall into wrongdoing.

The Qur’an also mentions those who obstruct people from the path of Allah.

...ٱلَّذِينَ يَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَيَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًا

“Those who obstruct from the path of Allah and seek to make it crooked...”

Excerpt from Surah al-A‘rāf 7:45

This verse shows a form of evil that is heavier than merely not following the true path. They obstruct others from the path of Allah. They want that path to appear crooked. They create a negative perception of truth, distort meanings and prevent people from reaching guidance.

This is -2 because it is not merely personal wrongdoing. It has already become an obstacle to others.

The Qur’an also states:

...إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ لِيَصُدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ

“Indeed, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to obstruct from the path of Allah...”

Surah al-Anfāl 8:36

This verse shows that wealth, influence and resources can be used to obstruct people from truth. This is worse than merely refusing to accept the truth personally. It has now become the use of resources to block the truth.

In the general context of the spectrum of action, this can happen at many scales. There are people who use money, position, media, influence, office or relationships to cover the truth and prevent others from understanding it. That is worse.

The Qur’an also warns against cooperating in sin and aggression.

...وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِ...

“...And do not cooperate in sin and aggression...”

Excerpt from Surah al-Mā’idah 5:2

This verse is very important for -2 because it shows that evil becomes heavier when it involves cooperation, support, networks or shared influence. A sin committed alone is already bad. But when people begin to invite, support, assist, spread or strengthen that sin, it becomes worse.

• This can happen in collective slander.
• This can happen in group bullying.
• This can happen in campaigns to bring someone down.
• This can happen in spreading false news.
• This can happen in building systems that pressure people.

The Qur’an also mentions those who love indecency to spread among the believers.

...إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُحِبُّونَ أَن تَشِيعَ ٱلْفَٰحِشَةُ فِي ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟

“Indeed, those who love that indecency should spread among those who believe...”

Excerpt from Surah an-Nūr 24:19

This verse shows that spreading evil has a serious level. Some people do not merely commit evil, but love for that evil to spread. They like it when shame is exposed, slander is amplified, sin becomes a spectacle and society becomes accustomed to corruption.

This is clearly worse than a personal wrongdoing.

At level -2, evil becomes contagious.

• It moves outward from the self to others.
• It moves from one action into an atmosphere.
• It moves from an individual sin into a collective social effect.

The Qur’an also mentions slander and news that is not verified.

...يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِن جَآءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌۢ بِنَبَإٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوٓا۟ أَن تُصِيبُوا۟ قَوْمًۢا بِجَهَٰلَةٍ

“O you who believe, if a fāsiq comes to you with news, then verify it, lest you harm a people out of ignorance.”

Excerpt from Surah al-Ḥujurāt 49:6

This verse is important because it shows how a single piece of news can bring harm to a people. Spreading news without tabayyun is not merely a small communication mistake. It can become the cause of others being wronged out of ignorance.

This is -2 when the evil begins to injure other parties.

When arranged technically, Spectrum -2 has several main characteristics.

• First, the evil begins to involve other people. It is no longer merely one’s own wrongdoing. It begins to hurt, influence, confuse, drag in or damage other human beings.
• Second, its effect is wider than the original action. One lie can destroy someone’s name. One slander can break a family. One misleading piece of writing can misguide many readers. One burst of anger can destroy the atmosphere of a home. One unverified share can trigger hostility.
• Third, it creates a chain of evil. Other people may begin to believe it, spread it, hate because of it, insult because of it or commit the same sin.
• Fourth, it can happen even when the doer did not intend for it to go that far. Bad intention makes the sin heavier. But negligence that causes major harm remains dangerous. That is why tabayyun, trustworthiness in knowledge and control of the tongue are extremely important.
• Fifth, it has not necessarily reached level -3. -2 is not necessarily falsehood against Allah or the heaviest oppression. But it is already worse than -1 because its effect has moved beyond the self and has begun to affect others.
• Sixth, it must be stopped immediately because its effects can grow. The evil of -2 can easily descend into -3 or -4 when it is defended, systematised or used to oppose the verses of Allah.

Example from the Angle of the Tongue

A person backbites. We know that this is bad. But when he backbites with the intention of making others hate someone, until people’s relationship with that person is damaged, that is far worse. It is no longer merely a dirty tongue. It has created social hatred.

Example from the Angle of Slander

A person receives a story whose truth has not been confirmed and then spreads it. That too is bad. But when that story causes someone to lose a job, lose dignity, become isolated or have his family disturbed, that is far worse. One unverified piece of news has eventually become a tool of oppression.

Example from the Angle of Family

A person gets angry with his child. It may originally be -1 if his words are harsh. But when his anger is repeated in the form of threats, humiliation and fear until the child grows up with emotional wounds, it has entered Spectrum -2 or beyond. Its effect has widened into the formation of another person’s soul.

Example from the Angle of Spouses

A person quarrels with his spouse. That is something that can happen. But when he deliberately exposes his spouse’s private faults to family, friends or social media in order to gain public support, that is worse. A household problem that should have been resolved with trustworthiness has been turned into material for social corruption.

Example from the Angle of Knowledge

A person misunderstands one verse. That may be a mistake. But when he teaches that misunderstanding to others with confidence, without checking, until many people follow that wrong understanding, that is worse. It is no longer a personal mistake. It has become an inherited mistake.

Example from the Angle of Writing

A person writes an article with incomplete information. That is bad if it misleads. But when the writing is deliberately arranged to drag readers toward hatred, slander, misunderstanding or false conclusions, it enters -2. Writing has become a tool through which evil spreads.

Example from the Angle of Da‘wah

A person conveys religion with a tone that insults everyone who still does not understand. As a result, people who were just beginning to come closer to the truth become distant because they feel trampled upon. This is worse. True content should not be carried in a way that drives people away from truth.

Example from the Angle of Comments

A person leaves a sarcastic comment. That is bad. But when the comment triggers a chain of arguments, gathers people to attack and causes other readers to become confused or afraid to read, that is worse. One comment suddenly becomes a doorway to chaos.

Example from the Angle of Wealth

A person is wasteful. That is indeed bad. But when he builds a culture of showing off until others feel pressured, fall into debt and join a race of wastefulness, that is worse. Personal evil becomes a social culture.

Example from the Angle of Power

A person makes a mistake in a position of trust. That is bad. But when he uses his position to pressure others, cover his own mistakes, force people into silence or prevent the truth from coming out, that is worse. Power makes the evil wider.

Example from the Angle of Social Media

A person shares a wrong opinion. That is bad if he is careless. But when he produces a series of posts, cuts context, uses sensational titles and mobilises followers to attack a certain party without clear evidence, that is worse. Social media causes the evil to spread.

Example from the Angle of Withholding Truth

A person does not want to accept advice. That is bad. But when he prevents others from hearing the same advice, mocks those who want to learn and removes the space for true discussion, that is worse. He is not merely rejecting it for himself. He is obstructing others.

Example from the Angle of Assistance

A person helps someone in difficulty while reminding him of the favour. That is bad. But when assistance is turned into a tool of control, forced loyalty, exploitation or public humiliation of the recipient, that is worse. Assistance that should have been raḥmah has turned into an instrument of control.

Example from the Angle of Silence

A person remains silent when seeing a small mistake. That may be bad depending on the situation. But when his silence causes oppression to continue, the victim to remain pressured and the wrongdoer to become bolder, that is worse. Silence, when one is able to prevent harm, can become part of the chain of corruption.

Conclusion

Therefore, -2 is the level of evil that begins to widen.

It is not only about the wrong that occurs.

It is about the effect that comes out of that wrong.

When evil begins to touch others, confuse others, wrong others, mislead others, obstruct others from truth or create a chain of sins, it has moved to a worse level.

Worse is when evil does not stop with oneself, but begins to spread to others, create chain effects and open the door to wider corruption.
