The Spectrum of Human Actions According to the Quran
Fourth Foundation: The Quran Distinguishes Between Ordinary Sin, Major Sin and Persistent Sin
Just as goodness has levels, evil also has levels.
There are people who make mistakes and then become aware. There are people who sin and then repent. There are people who sin and then defend the sin. There are people who sin and then call others toward sin. There are people who sin and then build a system so that the sin becomes a culture.
The Quran mentions those who do not persist stubbornly in sin.
وَلَمْ يُصِرُّوا عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلُوا وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ...
“...And they do not persist in what they have done while they know.”
Excerpt from Surah Āli ‘Imrān 3:135
This verse is also very important because it shows that falling into a mistake is not the same as persisting in a mistake.
A person who commits a sin, then becomes aware, regrets it and returns to Allah is not the same as a person who continues to defend the sin while he knows.
This is the difference between:
-1 Bad
-2 Worse
-3 Worst
-4 Persistently Bad
