The Quran Explains Itself
The Quran is the word of Allah from the Essence of Al-Aziz, making it preserved from any defects and imperfections.
There are many proofs in the Quran that indicate it can explain itself without needing to rely on asbabun nuzul or external interpretations.
Allah SWT has stated that if we are lost, we should return to the Quran, and it will provide guidance. The same message was also conveyed by the Prophet in the Hadith of Tsaqalain.
The Role of the Quran as a Guide
Imagine we possess the Quran, and the world is inhabited only by us. At that moment, has the Quran lost its nature as a guide for us?
-
YES, if we merely memorize it without understanding its Ruh. At that moment, the Quran is useless because it is just a book that is not understood. It may provide Nur as an illuminator, but it does not necessarily provide Hadi as guidance.
-
NO, if the Ruh of the Quran is present in our hearts. The book remains a book, but the Ruh of the Quran continues to be Nur and Hadi in our chests. At that moment, even if we are alone, it still guides us in life, in the barzakh realm, across the sirat, and until we reach the Haudh of the Prophet.
The Problem of Understanding the Quran
The main issue today is that we often understand the knowledge of the Quran purely through intellect, by processing input from sight, hearing, or memorization.
Intellectual scholars take the Quran, then refer to interpretations, asbabun nuzul, books of past scholars, and other sources to discuss a topic. This already involves third-party sources or more, rather than taking it directly from the Quran.
Thus, it is no surprise that understanding and studying the Quran becomes difficult because it is not the Quran that explains itself to us, but secondary and further sources. After that, we also interpret the interpretations of past scholars.
However, Ahlul Qalbu understand the Quran not through memorization or sight, but through their own hearts.
The Quran is a Ruh
The Quran is alive, moving, and resonating in their hearts. It is a Ruh that has descended into them and has become close to them.
Indeed, it is not impossible for the Ahlul Qalbu if the Quran itself reminds them:
"Do not be hasty, I will facilitate your recitation."
The Quran says this, and we only need to remain calm and accept it.
If we doubt something, the Quran itself will guide us:
"Open now, page 401, bottom right. That is what I am speaking about."
This is how the Quran speaks within the heart, yet not everyone pursues this level.
The Quran is an Ocean of Knowledge
It is our choice whether we want to bring the entire ocean of the Quran into ourselves or simply dive in and drink from it as much as we want.
However, our minds cannot contain all of it because Allah has stated in the Quran itself:
"If all the trees were made into pens and the sea as ink, the words of Allah would not be exhausted. And if another sea were added, it still would not be sufficient." (Surah Luqman 31:27)
So why learn excessively? Surrender yourself to the Rabb and let the Rabb guide you, for the Rabb is Al-Haqq, and Al-Haqq is the Quran.
From personal experience, I simply follow exactly what Allah commands, and Allah Himself pours the entire ocean of Quranic knowledge into me without me having to study it formally.
This is what is meant by the Quran explaining itself to us. That is, if you are willing to accept the logical explanation based on my personal experience.
Evidences that the Quran Explains Itself
Nevertheless, if further evidence is required, then take it from the Quran itself.
Allah has given us a "user manual" to manage ourselves in this world, and He certainly would not make it difficult for us. Instead, He provides clear proof. Here are some of them:
📌 The Quran as a Clarifier (Tibyan) of All Things for Muslims
"We have sent down to you the Book (the Quran) as a CLARIFIER of ALL THINGS, guidance, mercy, and glad tidings for those who submit." (Surah An-Nahl 16:89)
This verse affirms that the Quran is tibyanan likulli shay', meaning a clarifier of all things.
This means the Quran has its own mechanism for explaining its meaning without needing external sources.
📌 The Quran Contains No Doubt and is Clear for the Righteous
"This is the Book in which there is no doubt; a guidance for the righteous." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:2)
If the Quran contains no doubt, then it should be clear enough to understand without excessive external interpretation.
All muhkamat verses can be understood clearly if one has a basic linguistic foundation and a bit of intellect.
It is not an exaggeration to say that Huruf Muqatta'at such as Sad at the beginning of Surah Sad or Alif Lam Mim at the beginning of Surah Al-Baqarah can also be understood by analyzing the Quran contextually within each surah.
📌 The Quran is an Easily Understood Book
"And indeed, We have made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?" (Surah Al-Qamar 54:17, 22, 32, 40)
Allah has affirmed that the Quran is easy to understand.
This shows that it does not require asbabun nuzul or external interpretations for it to be understood at a basic level.
📌 The Quran Explains Itself (Tafsirul Quran bil Quran)
"Do they not then reflect upon the Quran? If it had been from other than Allah, they would have found much contradiction in it." (Surah An-Nisa' 4:82)
This verse shows that if there is confusion, we should refer to other related verses in the Quran to find the answer.
For example:
- Surah Al-Fatihah 1:6 "Guide us to the straight path."
- Surah Al-An’am 6:153 "And indeed, this is My straight path, so follow it..."
The second verse (6:153) explains the meaning of "the straight path" in the first verse (1:6).
📌 The Quran is Interpreted by Allah Himself
"Then, indeed, it is upon Us to explain it." (Surah Al-Qiyamah 75:19)
📌 Prohibition of Following External Interpretations Without Clear Evidence
"And do not follow that of which you have no knowledge..." (Surah Al-Isra’ 17:36)
This verse reminds us that we cannot follow something without clear evidence, including external interpretations that are not based on the Quran itself.
We may take interpretations as guidance, but the final authority remains with the Quran itself.
Conclusion
Imam Mahdi, like his forefather Prophet Muhammad SAW, explains the Quran without needing hadiths or other sources because he and the Quran are his proof.
The Quran will become complete when it undergoes islah and is sufficient as a guidance for all of humanity.
Closing Statement
The Quran is a living guidance. It is not just a text that is read or memorized, but a Ruh that moves within the hearts of those who truly submit to Allah.
Thus, the Quran alone is sufficient, for it explains itself.
