If You Want to Understand How Imam Mahdi Will Be Reformed in One Night, First Understand Ahlul Kisa’

Many people want to understand how Imam Mahdi will emerge, how he will be recognised and how Allah will appoint him as a leader.

However, when it is mentioned that Allah will reform Imam Mahdi in a single night, many immediately imagine an ordinary process or a mystical process.

Rasulullah SAW stated clearly:

الْمَهْدِيُّ مِنَّا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ يُصْلِحُهُ اللَّهُ فِي لَيْلَةٍ

“Al-Mahdi is from among us, the Ahlul Bait. Allah will reform him in one night.”

This hadith is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah 4085 and is listed as Hasan.

The word used in the hadith is يُصْلِحُهُ (yuṣliḥuhu), meaning that Allah repairs, corrects, reforms or perfects his affairs.

This does not simply mean that a person suddenly becomes extremely good. It may encompass a change in circumstances, readiness, guidance, qualification and his appointment to the task Allah has ordained.

However, before we go too far in discussing Imam Mahdi, we must first understand how Allah manifested the purification and special designation of Ahlul Kisa.

The Event of Ahlul Kisa Under the Kisa’

A passage from Surah al-Ahzab 33 states:

إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا

“Indeed, Allah only intends to remove impurity from you, O Ahlul Bait and to purify you with a thorough purification.”

In a hadith narrated from Umm Salamah, Rasulullah SAW took Hasan, Husain, Ali and Fatimah and covered them with the kisa’, a cloth or blanket. He then prayed:

اللَّهُمَّ هَؤُلاَءِ أَهْلُ بَيْتِي وَخَاصَّتِي أَذْهِبْ عَنْهُمُ الرِّجْسَ وَطَهِّرْهُمْ تَطْهِيرًا

“O Allah, these are my Ahlul Bait and my special ones. Remove impurity from them and purify them with a thorough purification.”

Umm Salamah asked:

“Am I among them, O Messenger of Allah?”

He replied:

إِنَّكِ عَلَى خَيْرٍ

“You are upon goodness.”

This narration is found in Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3871. The same event is also recorded in Sahih Muslim 2424.

From this event, we can see that the purification of Ahlul Kisa did not take place through human campaigns, social recognition or their own efforts to announce their status.

It was Rasulullah SAW who gathered them.

It was Rasulullah SAW who made their identity known.

It was Rasulullah SAW who stated that they were Ahlul Bait and his special ones.

Then, the verse of Allah was recited regarding the removal of rijz and their purification.

The cloth or blanket was not what possessed the power to purify them. The kisa’ was merely the setting in which an event took place that Allah made into a sign.

The One who purifies is Allah. The One who chooses is Allah. Allah is also the One who made their status known through His Messenger.

This is what must be understood.

Ahlul Kisa did not need to declare themselves to be Ahlul Kisa. They did not need to construct a narrative that they were chosen people. They did not need to obtain the approval of all humanity first.

Allah made them known through a simple event of immense significance.

What Does This Have to Do with Imam Mahdi?

The hadith about Imam Mahdi likewise places the primary action in the hands of Allah:

الْمَهْدِيُّ مِنَّا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ يُصْلِحُهُ اللَّهُ فِي لَيْلَةٍ

“Al-Mahdi is from among us, the Ahlul Bait. Allah will reform him in one night.”

Observe the structure of the hadith.

Imam Mahdi is described as being from Ahlul Bait. Then, the primary action is not attributed to human beings but to Allah:

يُصْلِحُهُ اللَّهُ

“Allah will reform him.”

This shows that the major change involving Imam Mahdi will take place through the intervention of the Rabb, not merely through political processes, organisational processes or human planning.

The hadith does not explain in detail what form this islah will take. It does not mention the location, who will be present, what will happen before and after that night or how people will recognise him.

Therefore, we cannot invent details that are not mentioned by the hadith. However, neither can we disregard the fact that Allah is capable of bringing about a major change in a person in a single night.

One Night as a Turning Point

A single night does not necessarily mean that Imam Mahdi had never lived a life before that moment. It also does not necessarily mean that all his knowledge, experience and personality were only created over a period of several hours.

Rather, a single night may be the turning point Allah has ordained. On that night, his circumstances, guidance, readiness, position and task may be arranged by Allah until he becomes a person fit to bear that trust.

Ahlul Kisa as the Key to Understanding Islah

The event of Ahlul Kisa helps us understand one pattern in the actions of Allah.

Allah may choose certain human beings. Allah may gather them in a single event. Allah may make their identity known through His Messenger. Allah may remove rijz from them and purify them. Allah may also raise a person’s status without waiting for all people to agree first.

The same applies to Imam Mahdi.

The hadith does not instruct us to imagine that people will create Imam Mahdi through elections, campaigns or public recognition. The hadith affirms that Allah Himself will reform him.

However, it must be understood that this does not mean Imam Mahdi is the same as Ahlul Kisa or that the process of his islah will necessarily be identical in every detail to the event under the kisa’.

Ahlul Kisa was a specific event during the time of Rasulullah SAW. Imam Mahdi, on the other hand, is an end-times event.

The similarity lies in the principle that Allah has His own way of choosing, cleansing, preparing and making His servant known for a great task.

That is why anyone who wants to understand how Imam Mahdi will be reformed in a single night cannot immediately jump to theories about his emergence, banners, bai‘ah and governance without first understanding the meaning of Ahlul Bait, Ahlul Baiti, Itrah, Itrati and Ahlul Kisa.

Read first. Study it deeply first. Do not take one verse, one hadith or one term and then build a hasty conclusion.
